Checkered garter snake
Thamnophis marcianus
Sukari is a female Checkered Garter snake born in 2020. There are around 35 species of Garter/Ribbon snakes. They are found in fields, forests, wetlands, marshes, near bodies of water. Garter snakes are best known as accomplished swimmers, but they are also known to occasionally climb as needed. They are native to large parts of North America, from Canada all the way down through Central America and Mexico.   Garter snakes are diurnal, which means that they make great pets as they are active during the day and unlike most snakes Garters thrived when housed together. But ensure you check the sex of your Garters as males and females housed together will give you a heap of tiny live birthed babies! In the wild they will eat amphibians, small fish, and small mammals, in captivity a rodent based diet is usually easily established.   Garter snakes are small, slender snakes that come in a myriad of colour schemes ranging from drab brown/greys to more vibrant blues/reds. There is not much guess work required to understand why checkered garter snakes got their name.
